HM Customs and Excise Officer
The Work
HM Customs and Excise are a Civil Service Department and belong to the Treasury. They undertake a vital role in an airport.
That role is to:
- Protect Society.
- Stop and question passengers to look for undeclared and also prohibited and restricted items.
- Control import and export freight.
- Ensure nothing interferes with control of passengers or goods.
- Work in teams, these teams include:
- Mobile teams
- These are Anti Smuggling Officers who check passengers and freight looking for prohibited and restricted items.
- Station teams
- These are again uniformed Anti-Smuggling Officers who are based at an airport. Their work is passenger based and often the most visible of the Customs and Excise teams to the travelling public. These are the people who may stop you and ask to see the contents of your suitcase.
- Freight teams
- This role involves checking paperwork and examining import and export freight. They also see that the correct amount of duty is being paid.
- Dog teams
- These officers use dogs to uncover drugs, cash and meat being illegally brought into the country.

Training
People joining Customs and Excise will follow a specialised programme of training. There is a fast track programme available for graduates which can provide up to 5 years of structured training and development.
There are also opportunities that enable a trainee to benefit from the experience of others while developing their own experience and relevant additional qualifications through a training plan.
Customs and Excise personnel are expected to develop their knowledge and skills and will be required to attend training and information sessions throughout their career.
