Cargo Agent
The Work
Cargo Agents are employed by freight/cargo companies. The work involves:
- Handling, storing, transporting, loading and unloading freight/cargo on and off aircraft, including heavy and sometimes dangerous goods and animals.
- Driving and operating fork-lift trucks (FLT) and elevated transport vehicles.
- Freight building and preparation.
- Using PC's and a computerised inventory control system.
- Using x-ray equipment.
- Customer liaison.
- Security.
Skills and Personal Attributes
To be a Cargo Agent, you should:
- Be a team player with good communication skills. Be physically fit and work well under pressure.
- Have a good standard of literacy and numeracy.
- Be reliable and flexible.
- Have good IT skills.
- Customer service experience.
- Have a current counter balance or reach fork lift truck licence.
- Have a clean/full driving licence.
Entry Requirements
- There are no minimum entry requirements for this job.
- You'll need to be at least 18 years.
- Be physically fit with normal colour vision.
- Have a 5-year checkable work history.
- Employers prefer applicants with a good standard of literacy and numeracy, possibly with the equivalent of a GCSE grade C or above, or a Basic Skill Level 2 pass.
- You will need to pass a full and strict criminal record check.
Training
This is normally undertaken on-the-job.
Airline and Airport Operations and related courses at OCN Levels 1, 2 and 3 (BTEC Certificate) through Directions Finningley, at Robin Hood Airport.
Opportunities
Most opportunities for Cargo Agents are at the United Kingdom's main and regional airports.
