Baggage Handler (Ramp Agent)
The Work
 Baggage Handlers, also known as Ramp Agents, are usually employed by individual handling agents, airlines or airports. The work involves:
- Handling, storing, transporting, loading and unloading passengers' luggage onto and off the aircraft. The job may also involve transporting cargo or catering supplies
- Driving and operating baggage trucks and other apron vehicles, lifting equipment and conveyor belts, and may involve lifting heavy luggage
- Working with aircraft dispatchers, ensuring that weight is distributed equally in the aircraft hold
- General cleaning and maintenance of ramp working areas
- Communication with flight crew and aircraft dispatchers
Skills and Personal Attributes
To be a Baggage Handler, you should:
- Be friendly and able to get on well with others
- Be a team player with good communication skills
- Be physically fit and work well under pressure
- Be reliable and flexible
- Have a clean/full UK driving licence with own transport
- Be security conscious
Entry Requirements
You'll need to:
- Be a minimum age of 18
- Be physically fit with normal colour vision
- Have a good standard of literacy and numeracy
- Expect to take a literacy and numeracy test
- Work within current Civil Aviation Publications (CAPS) guidelines
- Have a 5-year work history
- Have a good standard of literacy and numeracy, possibly with the equivalent of a GCSE grade C or above, or a Basic Skill qualification
- Pass a full and strict criminal record check
Training
Training is normally undertaken prior to formally starting work and can involve a mixture of classroom and on-the-job training on barcode recognition equipment, lift equipment and operating vehicles safely and effectively.
