Air Traffic EngineerThe WorkThe most important aspect of the work of an Air Traffic Engineer is to maintain, repair, modify and ensure the safe operation of communication and navigation systems that control the passage of aircraft in flight and on the ground.Many Air Traffic Engineers are employed at airports and provide support to Air Traffic Controllers. They also check that all navigational, radar and communications systems are functioning correctly and providing a continuous, safe and reliable service. Air Traffic Engineers also ensure that, in the event of a failure in the Air Traffic radar systems, procedures are in place to ensure the continued safe operation of aircraft. Senior Air Traffic EngineerThe Senior Air Traffic Engineer has responsibility for making sure that Air Traffic Engineering meets the statutory and regulatory requirements.Duties and ResponsibilitiesResponsible for maintaining, repairing and modifying technical equipment as follows:
Skills and Personal AttributesShould have a current Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Personal Technical Certificate for all safety equipment at the airport.Be capable of producing work of the highest standards that meets current legislation and regulations. Be responsible for personal safety and the safety of colleagues and others in the workplace. Carry out all other duties relevant to the job as required.
Entry RequirementsAs a graduate engineer you should have a SATOR 3 accredited degree in electrical or electronic engineering or equivalent degree, as well as, A Levels in maths and physics.
TrainingNational Air Traffic Services Ltd (NATS) runs a two year engineer training scheme for graduate engineers. The Scheme provides an introduction to NATS systems and the opportunity to gain experience via work placements.OpportunitiesNational Air Traffic Services (NATS) employ 4 out of 5 Air Traffic Engineers.Regional airports offer opportunities for Air Traffic Control Officers and Air Traffic Control Assistants. Selection ProcessNational Air Traffic Services (NATS) recruitment starts in early spring and involves attendance on a selection test day.
